"cheap fast way for spikes: I do my boyfriend's hair and all you have to do is buy a $0.99 bottle of cheap glue, pour enough into your hand to fill your palm, then grab a chunk of hair and twist upwards. he has a lot of hair, and i only used about 1/4 of the bottle and it lasts a hell of a long time, or until you start feeling dirty. it doesn't move an inch either. oh yeah and go over it twice. it helps. :)" - sambalamba, Aug 15 2001
"I think the best way to spike your hair (especially mohawks) is to use hair wax or hair stick products to make the hair more moldable and gravity defiant. Then use elmers washable school glue and put it on the hair for a solidifying component. The glue also works well for liberty spikes. For extra support; once the glue has lost it's moldability, use hair spray as a protective coat to help keep it's shape from the elements." - Nathan, Jul 26 2001
"For mohawks put elmers glue in it while its dry then slam it in a phone book it'll stay for weeks and look punk as f*ck." - brass knuckle hxc boy, Jun 19 2001

I've been spiking my hair for 15 years . I've had mainly liberty spikes usually at least 4" long, sometimes as short as 1 and a half inches. If you want liberty or long triangular shaped spikes, Elmer's glue works wonders and is best. You just can't let the glue dry in your fingers or you'll end up with hair full of chunks. The longer you leave it in, the harder it is to wash out, and I'd say every 2 or 3 days is adequate. And when washing, use hot water and pull the spikes apart when before they're wet, and then wet it and pull each spike apart some more. Then get it really wet, and use your fingernails to squeeze the rest out.Knox Gelatin is messy and requires heating, smells bad, doesn't hold in rain. Though it does work well for some hair styles. Wood glue: I tried that once and ended up pulling out lots of hair and it took more than a half hour to wash out. Chemical Shaving cream may cause permanent hair loss if used routinely and suck for liberty spikes. Soap and eggs have held up some short mohawks, but suck because they are not water resilient. I've never tried KY jelly or Surgilube, and never will because it'ssperm killer and I don't want that stuff constantly on my head and all over the furniture and pillows. If you just want hair that's porcupine spiky and not liberty spiked then just use hair gel. I used for a year that pink aquanet in '86 and it worked to make all kinds of new wavish and spiky styles, but smelled so perfumy that I still get flashbacks of that smell. I stopped spiking my hair when turning vegan until finding something that doesn't contain animal byproducts.
I wrote in a few hours ago about elmer's glue for liberty spikes. Well, according to a mailing list post, it contains no animal by products. - If this was your tip, you didn't give a name! Send me a name/nickname if you wish.
i use wood glue sometimes, but you've got to do it carefully or you'll have great gobs of glue in your hair. i guess massive amounts of the sort of gel made for people w/curly hair keeps it pretty random, but it's not good for long spikes or mohawks. - becca
use elmer's school glue (the gel kind) to spike your hair instead of hairspray or gel. - STaran7854@aol.com
